Makers of number plates have had some exceptional upgrades to the equipment and procedures for making up plates. Initially they would need a heavy mechanical press, a die for each character and a supply of metal plates. Nowadays the digits can be printed onto a sheet of reflective material and then a hard clear acrylic plate is laid over it making it complete.

Metal number plates cannot be fitted to any old car in the uk. They are only permissable on cars first registered before January 1st 1974. Any car registered after this date must have acrylic type plates in white for the front and yellow for the rear. The metal ones are silver letters on a black background, very attractive but not good for the cameras which are in use now.
